A Reformation
A couple of weeks ago I met a vendor at the mall, named Nathaniel. He was a black man dressed in business casual and his composure suggested he had all of the secrets of life stored up in his forehead. When he looked at me it was an instant transference of confidence; confidence in him, confidence in myself, and confidence in the message he had to share with me. Now I’ll continue with my story where I left off last week, and in case you missed it here’s the link that will take you to it: Missionary Moment @ Eastern Oils.
“Woohoo! Darth Vader has found religion!” I cheered to Nathaniel, fully understanding the metaphore he had presented to me. He was comparing himself to Star Wars’ youngest protagonist Anakin Skywalker. Anakin grew up as a slave, won a race for his freedom and started training in the supernatural religion of the “Jedi.” However, before Anakin could complete his training, he was decieved by a wicked Dark Lord. Anakin followed the Dark Lord and became caught up in the snares of power–before he knew it he had become “Darth Vader,” the right hand of evil.
I talked with Nathaniel for some length about his life and also about mine, sharing life’s experiences and lessons learned. The man never claimed to have been a saint and though he didn’t volunteer most of the thing I learned about him, he did share the things he thought I could benefit from. He told me how he had grown up in Miami and his father was a preacher there. He then recounted a tale I’ve heard all too often: his father was incredibly strict and Nathaniel didn’t want to be looked at as Daddy’s lil boy so he rebelled and did a lot of things he now regrets. The turning point in his life was after he got sent to County Jail for fighting a man who threatened his brother-in-law. He told me, “If there’s anything I learned as a kid, it’s that you’ve got to be loyal to the people you grow up with. You look out for them and they look out for you; if you haven’t got that growin up in the big city then you ain’t gonna survive.” He did time for his crime and came out looking for a change, so he packed his bags and headed for San Antonio where he could make a new life for himself and his family. When he got here he started looking for a religion to give his life some structure. It seems he was successful since here he was telling me his story and working for a religiously owned business.
At some point during our discussion, I told my new friend that in a year I’d be going on a mission; he chuckled and asked, “What, you mean like a secret mission or somethin’?” I laughed too and then I said quite seriously, “No, I mean like where you go and teach people in some other part of the world about Jesus Christ and his atonement for our sins.”
Nathaniel paused and looked at me for a moment in silence. His eyes shone with respect as he asked, “What religion are you?”
I easily declared, “I’m a Mormon. You know, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
Nathaniel looked toward the wall as he said, “I’ve met Mormon missionaries before.” He lifted up his hand which still grasped the Holy Bible, “They gave me this book.” He smiled at me and said, “They were real nice guys. I wish I could get another one of these from them. This ones really worn and though I’ve gotten lots of Bibles before, none of ‘em feel like this one does.”
To me this was the golden experience, I was finally getting to share the best part of my life with someone else and I just knew that this man needed what I had. I wanted to shout at the man, “DUDE! You can!!” but I’m out of time to write so you’re going to have to come back in a couple of days to find out the rest of the story.
Thank you for reading! I hope you will come back and read the rest later. Please, comment on my post if you like it and so that I know that you have read it.
Sounds awesome, I can’t wait to hear the rest! Keep it up!
PROQUE!!! I WANNA READ MORE! D: I was reading it outloud to my mom….that makes me sad you haven’t finished…

In the meantime, I’d like to share my/mom’s experience this past week. My car is a 1998, so some of the technology in the car is outdated. Though I would have been fine with this, when the front speakers broke, causing an inbalance to my music, I informed my dad that what I wanted for christmas was for my radio to be fixed. So this past week my dad had me keep my car here at the house (I knew what he was doing though).
Now, I have two sets of scriptures. I have some seperated scriptures in my room for reading at night before bedtime, and my put together set out in my car for the use of seminary. I knew that someone was going to have to go into my car to fix the radio, so I didn’t bother to move my scriptures from the front seat.
When I returned home that day, my mother related her experience with the man who had re-installed my radio. After installing my radio, the man approached my mother and asked, “Are you Mormon?” bewildered, (because I’d never told my mom about the scriptures in the front seat) my mother replied, “Yes…”
“Well I used to be Mormon,” he informed her before he shrugged, “I guess the religion thing doesn’t work out for everyone, does it?”
“Now I decided to be bold, because not only did this man smoke, but he also lived with his catholic fiancee,” my mom told me before she continued to relate that she told him that, actually, yes it is for everyone. Everyone here on this earth followed Heavenly Father’s plan in the pre-existance, and we all still have the potential to do it again. When you think that religion isn’t for you, that’s actually Satan telling you that so that he can draw you away from heavenly father.
The man thanked my mother, telling her that normally he didn’t do house calls so all the way up here he kept asking himself why he felt that he needed to take this house call. “Now I know why,” he told her. He then explained that recently the missionaries had visited their home, and his fiancee, suprisingly, had not only allowed them inside but had also listened to their message.
My mother then encouraged the man, since his fiancee was catholic and he didn’t know for sure how she’d feel about this, that they first needed to find Christ and that they needed to come unto him and then decide what they wanted to do in regards to religion.
I just thought it was interesting. Though I wasn’t actually there (stupid school…) I did tell explain, “well I leave my scriptures in the front seat, so he probably noticed that I didn’t just have the bible there,” so I do think I had some part in it…(shrug). just thought I’d share that with you.
HURY UP AND FINISH YOUR STORY! D:<
Sarah
Wow your story is wicked righteous! I hope your mom left that man with the missionaries’ phone number or something. She was totally right to say, “Religion is for everyone.” Although I dunno if I would have had the guts to say all of that so coherently; your Mom is an awesome lady. And just think, if you had been shirking your obligations and skipping seminary or not bringing your scriptures, then your mom wouldn’t have gotten the chance to help the man. Yeah, you did good, kid. Lol.
Alright, I’ll finish it very soon, I promise. In the mean time, share it with your friends.
There are so many people out there looking for the “thing” that is missing in there lives, but don’t know what it is they are looking for. It’s a wonderful experience when we can help them to find Christ and His Church. It is great that you all share these missionary experiences with one another. Please continue to do so.
I love your story and I want to read the rest of it!
