Missionary Moment at Eastern Oils

I was at the mall the other day and I had a conversation I will not soon forget; the experience is one that proved to me my calling as a missionary. I’ll share it with you though and see what you think.

Going to the mall implies that one has money, unfortunately, I do not, and as I walked around I tried to ignore the vendors that set up shop in the middle of the grand halls. I was walking quickly and trying to look as uninterested as possible when a vendor behind me practically shouted, “Excuse me, Sir!”

Maybe it’s because I’m young and I haven’t learned to be rude to salesmen yet, but I put on my best smile and slowly turned around. “Hi” he said holding out his hand to me, “I’m Nathaniel, what’s your name?” His tone wasn’t the least bit oily–unlike the products he sold–and I started to wonder if I had known him from somewhere. Then he said something that kind of freaked me out, “You’ve heard of Star Wars right?” I nodded, still at ease, “Well, say I’m Darth Vader and you’re Luke…” that’s the first thing that tipped me off that this guy was a little out of the ordinary–I slowly prompted him to continue with an “okay…?”

He went on, “Well I’m like Darth Vader, so I started out as a good guy and then turned into a bad guy.” Okay now I was getting worried, but I didn’t want him to see that so I smiled and repeated, “…okay?”

So he went on, “Well so I was bad, but then I turned back to the light. And it was that book in my register,” he opens it and pulls out the Good Book. “This is what brought me back from the dark side.”

I realized then that he wasn’t trying to sell me cologne, but for some reason this man called to me in a crowd of people to talk about religion! I laughed a jolly laugh and cheered him on saying, “Woohoo for Darth Vader! He has found religion!”

(I have no time to continue the story right now, so come back in a couple days to find out the rest.)
